What is Sadaqah?
‘Sadaqah’ literally means ‘righteousness’ and refers to voluntary giving. In Islamic terminology, sadaqah has been defined as an act of “giving something…without seeking a substitute in return and with the intention of pleasing Allah.”
Sadaqah is short-term and Sadaqah Jariyah is long-term. For example, you could give enough for a child to recieve a school meal for the week but by donating monthly, you can support that child to receive an early years education and receive a daily school meal.
Are Sadaqah and Zakat the same thing?
Sadaqah and Zakat are two different things. Sadaqah is a completely voluntary donation or kind gesture that is made for the pleasure of Allah SWT. Zakat is a compulsory donation, given once a year after certain financial requirements are met.
Who can give Sadaqah and who can Sadaqah be given to?
Anyone can give Sadaqah and according to Quran, there are eight categories of people who are entitled to receive Sadaqah including the poor and needy people. Sadaqah should be given out of pure intentions for God and as the person giving, you are encourage to give what you can manage and feel comfortable with.
Is there a right time to give Sadaqah?
Sadaqah can be made at any time of the year as it is a non-compulsory donation. It is important to remember that when giving, you are doing so without expecting anything in return.
During Ramadan, Kaffarah is the donation made when you intentionally miss or break your fast during the month of Ramadan without a valid reason. If you break fast, you should fast for two successive months, and if not, feed sixty poor people. The cost of providing 60 children at pre-school with a meal each for the day is £12 – learn more.
How does Sadaqah help people in Malawi?
We are inspiring communities to achieve a sustainable future through a number of projects such as providing school meals, delivering vital therapy and supporting communities to plant fruit trees.
Many children in Malawi are orphans or live in extreme poverty and often struggle to find enough food to eat, let alone find the time to focus on their education. However, our school meals project means that they get a hot meal whenever they attend pre-school. This helps improve concentration, creates an incentive to attend, and provides a benefit not only to their educational needs but also to their health.
Thousands of people live with disabilities in Malawi. Our project works closely with each disabled child and their family. We assess what physiotherapy each child requires as well as providing equipment and funding life-saving and life-changing operations. Some successes include helping children and young adults to sit up alone, walk and talk and feed themselves. All of these achievements enhance their independence and dignity.
Malnutrition is one of the major health problems facing the developing world, and is one of the leading causes of death in Malawi. Community tree clubs grow fruit trees to improve their diets as well as donating fruit trees to local schools and vulnerable people too. They can sell any surplus fruit at local markets giving them a more self-sufficient life.
When you give Sadaqah, you help improve their lives.
