Maston, our Fruit Tree Project Manager, knows more than just about fruit trees and so has been giving community groups knowledge and practical advice on how to grow vegetables. The groups expected the vegetables to fail if they were not planted near dambo (wetland) areas but Maston has been changing this myth with five of the fruit tree community clubs – and it’s working.
The five clubs have grown enough vegetables to eat and sell. Each club has saved the money from selling the vegetables and have now bought broiler chickens. They plan to raise the chickens to then sell at market.
Maston said, “We are promoting self-reliance. I have provided them with the knowledge and they are now making it a success. I have done livestock management training and agri-business training to help them diversify from only growing fruit trees to now growing vegetables and raising chickens.”
