Funny Nyirenda is 58 and is the secretary of the Uthuli Beach Village Committee (BVC), one of the BVC’s within our Fish Conservation project. Before our project, anyone who wasn’t a fisherman couldn’t be on the BVC’s but this was changed when the project started.
She said, “Before the project came the task of choosing people to be in a committee was for fishermen only so it was like assigning a pack of thieves to employ those who can guard what these thieves want to steal. It wasn’t good with the previous committees.”
Funny continued to say that she proudly works hard in her BVC to prove to her entire community that ladies can also take a role in protecting the fish.
She said, “If we didn’t have fish in the lake, we could suffer a lot because we need them to eat and to sell so that we can have money to send our children to school and to buy clothes.”
