Gladys is the Community Volunteer for Ntonya Village. She proudly took us from house to house to see the cookstoves that she had built with the householders.
Arriving at Amina’s house, she exclaimed, “Where were you?” Confused, as we had only been in the village for 30 minutes, she continued, “We have needed these cookstoves for a long time. They cook fast so I have food ready when the children come home from school, and the fire is contained making it safer too. I am using less firewood so I am saving money.”
Amina cooks for her husband and eight children and grandchildren, and the family spend between 6,000MK and 10,000MK on a single bundle of firewood. In the past, a bundle would last for no more than one week but now one bundle lasts for three weeks.
Amina and her husband do piecework to earn money and with the money they are saving, they are able to provide other basic needs for their family.
