Misheki in his tree nursery in Malawi with his germinated seeds

Seeds to seedlings

Three months on from sowing thousands of seeds, our tree planting farmers are now looking after their seedlings.

Thokozani planted 5,000 seeds of which 99% have germinated. He is really happy as this is his third growing season and he feels more confident in growing trees. In year one he planted out 1,000 trees and last year planted out 4,000 trees.

Misheki is a tree farmer who filled 4,000 tubes with seeds. He is really happy as 95% of them have now germinated.

Misheki has a few more months to care for these seedlings in his tree nursery before he prepares his land for planting them out. He will then have to continue caring for them for many years, cutting off branches to help the trees to grow, making sure that they have enough water and clearing weeds.

He is one of thousands of tree farmers that we are working with in northern Malawi – between them, they have planted over 15 million trees. Impressive isn’t it?
