Simon talks about the importance of forest conservation in Malawi

Proud to protect trees

Simon Msisya is the Chairman of Kalani Forest Conservation Committee and he was very proud to show us the six hectares of forest he is involved with looking after.

He said, “We started protecting this area six years ago after we were taught about the importance of conserving trees. Many people in the community were involved with charcoal production, the tobacco industry and brick making – all of which use lots of trees.

“Our committee is extremely motivated and together we not only educate others in our community but we create firebreaks and carry out patrols to make sure no-one is destroying our forest.”
