We are helping farmers improve the soil condition by making Mbeya manure and biochar.
One Community Fruit Tree club that is making both is Chiomba 2. Proud of their achievements so far this year, the Chairman, Limbakani, explained that they wanted to demonstrate what they had learnt.
This included a tour of their fruit tree nursery, hearing what different fruit seedlings they were growing, followed by a demonstration of how they make Mbeya manure.
They will use the manure when planting out their fruit tree seedlings so that the seedlings are growing in more nutritious soil conditions.
Chiomba 2 Community Club members are aged 20 to 63. Anozangi, the Club Secretary said, “Everyone works well together, and no-one lets the group down. We have learnt to grow vegetables too, and have been able to buy chickens and more recently, a pig too. We have shared some of the profits already so that members can do home improvements before the rainy season, and pay school fees.”
