Boreholes are such a vital facility in villages across Malawi, providing clean and fresh water to families for drinking, cooking and washing.
When they break, locals then have to source other means of water whether by walking longer distances to the next working borehole or for those living near to Lake Malawi, fetching water from the lake.
Soon, thanks to funding, we will have repaired 500 boreholes providing clean water to more than 75,000 people.
We purchase the spare parts and then work with the District Council’s maintenance team to get the pumps working again in villages like Chazoli village.
For around a year their borehole has not worked due to a relatively simple problem but after an hour, the team had it working again – much to the delight of the community who were eagerly watching and waiting with their empty buckets.
