We were delighted to meet Lazaro and his wife, Joyce. Last year they planted out 4,000 tree seedlings to add to 2,000 seedlings planted the year before. This year, their nursery will raise a further 3,000 seedlings.
Lazaro said, “Our children are our future. We want them to have clean air but also a supply of firewood and timber which they can use at their homes and sell for an income.”
As our visit continued, more and more of Lazaro’s family joined us. We met his seven children an two grandchildren, as well as his father-in-law who also happened to be the village Chief.
It was clear to see how hardworking Lazaro and Joyce are. Alongside their trees they are growing maize, ground nuts and sweet potatoes which they served to us as a thank you. They also have guinea fowl, ducks, goats, and cows.
One of his sons, Lemson, is hoping to get into university to study Agriculture. He said, “I want to learn new and improved techniques to come home and help my family more.”
