Ahead of the rainy season starting, our Fruit Tree Project Team have been busy training the Community Clubs on how to prepare their land to plant their seedlings.
One of the traditions each year, to mark the start of the planting season, is hosting demonstrations at the local schools benefitting from the project. This year we have a number of new schools being supported including Mkhokwe Primary School.
Several students read poems and sang songs relating to the project and the benefits of fruit trees, and then the students, teachers and PTA were invited to learn about the project. This included a hands on lesson in making Mbeya manure and learning about biochar. The students then helped plant 30 fruit trees including avocado, guava, soursop and orange seedlings.
Maston, Fruit Tree Project Manager, said, “The Primary Education Advisor, Headteacher, School Committees and local Chiefs have appreciated the development. They are grateful to us for planting a fruit tree orchard at the school as they say it will be a learning site and it will provide fruits to the children and generate an income too.”
