It felt like Christmas had come early for our pre-schools this month with the arrival of new toys and resources. Each year we aim to replace any broken toys with new ones and we are extremely grateful to two volunteers in particular who funded the recent delivery.
Hayley, a midwifery volunteer, spent some time helping out at our pre-schools during her placement in Malawi. Seeing how many children were attending pre-schools and sharing the limited number of toys, she put in a request to her friends in the UK to see if anyone would be able to purchase some new ones.
Box after box soon arrived at our UK office full of baby dolls, building blocks, toy cars, safari animals, colouring books and crayons, and space hoppers. Fortunately, our UK team had spare luggage allowance to bring everything to Malawi.
Sandra, a returning volunteer, did much the same and had suitcases filled with toys including space hoppers. The children love them but given the terrain, they do not last forever.
Once the toys had made it to Malawi they were distributed by our Education Coordinator to the eight pre-schools and it is clear to see how happy the children are to have more toys to play with.
