Happy Wildlife Conservation Day 2025! At Ripple Africa, we’re passionate about many things, including the importance of Fish Conservation.
This can only be implemented by boots on the ground doing the hard work of educating communities and patrolling. This is in the form of incredible Beach Village Committees (BVCs) who work hard to look after their section of Lake Malawi.
Meet Katentere Beach Village Committee , and their Chairman, Marilo Chirwa. We were impressed with the whole team, especially Mario’s dedication as he has been part of this BVC since it began in 2014.
At 68 years old, he has plenty of fishing experience. He began fishing with his father when he was eight years old. He explained that back then fish in Lake Malawi were plentiful and many species. This is why he is passionate about his role, making sure real change is made through fish conservation. In his 11 years in the BVC they are seeing great results as fish populations grow.
A huge thank you to all of the Beach Village Committees, you are creating real change.
