This is Dawira and two of his sons, Chikhumbutso, 17 and Bina, 5. Chikumbutso has just finished secondary school and wants to work for the Agriculture Department so was keen to learn from his father whilst he waits for his exam results.
The family, like other multiplication farmers, is tending to their fields. In a month or so, they will be harvesting the sweet potato vines. The vines will be bundled and distributed to more farming families within Nkhata Bay District.
Each family will receive five bundles of sweet potato vines ready to grow orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. We mention the colour of the potatoes as in Malawi the local variety are white and yellow and are less nutritious.
The majority of the families grow enough to support their families and they can sell any surplus at local markets. Help a family this Christmas to benefit from improved sweet potatoes.
