So how is a cow linked to our fuel-efficient cookstoves? Let us introduce you to Donge.
Donge is one of our fuel-efficient cookstove beneficaries. She cooks for her husband and four children and on the day we popped in, she was busy cooking African cake.
She loves her cookstove and this is why: “I save time as I don’t have to collect so much firewood. My cookstove doesn’t use as much wood as before on the traditional three stone fire. I have four cows that I milk so with the free time I now have, I am able to milk six days a week compared to a couple of days before.”
She sells around 20 litres of milk each day and per day, can earn 10,000MK (approx. £8/$10). The money she makes goes back into caring for her cows as well as her family.
Donge also saves money in the Village Savings Bank which she uses for the main farming season to buy fertiliser and other farming equipment. With her husband, they farm maize and sugar cane.
So there you have it, another benefit to our fuel-efficient cookstoves.
