One farmer in his second year of our Fruit Tree project is Breyer. He planted out soursop, orange and guava seedlings last year, and this year, with his Club, is looking forward to growing papaya trees as well.
During our visit to his home he demonstrated the challenge of harvesting a papaya from the old varieties. Taking a long pole he harvested a papaya and tried to catch it before it hit the ground. This is a challenge for many and unfortunately, Breyer did not manage to catch the papaya.
He said, “The hybrid variety are much better because the trees are shorter. We can harvest without a pole and the fruit is not damaged so if we want to sell them, we can. Nobody will want to buy a broken papaya like this one.”
