Her smile says it all. Connis is one of our sweet potato farmers. When she received vines in February of this year she couldn’t plant them straightaway as she had to accompany her pregnant daughter to the hospital.
Returning home a grandmother to a baby boy, other farmers told her to wait for the next rainy season as she would be wasting her time planting the vines then. Remembering some words of wisdom from her own grandmother, she planted the vines on the anthills.
She said, “My grandmother would say anthills hold secrets beneath them—fertility, life. I ignored the angry bites of worker ants as I planted and my work paid off as my sweet potatoes are big and I have twice as many as my neighbours.”
