Planting a tree is the easy bit, keeping it alive and in the case of fruit trees, bearing fruit, is trickier.
Since delivering fruit trees to local schools, Maston who works at Mwaya tree nursery, has hosted a training session for a number of the teachers to ensure that the trees do just that, bear fruit.
The teachers have been taught all about orchard management including understanding where and how to space the trees when planting, mulching, watering, weeding and pest and disease control.
The teachers explained that they had never received such detailed training so although they had received fruit trees in the past from various organisations, didn’t know how to plant and care for them.
Following this training the teachers say they are optimistic and have created a WhatsApp group to encourage each other and to be able to ask Maston questions when needed.
