This World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8) we are taking the opportunity to share stories on impactful confiscation led by Beach Village Committees in Malawi.
Two weeks ago, Beach Village Committees confiscated two Wogo nets measuring 2,000m and 1,8000m respectively. They were lined with mosquito nets. In addition, 500m of Kandwindwi ropes and eight sets of monofilament nets measuring between 80m and 1,500 metres.
Malindi Sub-Fisheries Association, during a joint patrol with community police, confiscated a mosquito net drag net measuring 1,235m.
These nets damage the lake’s ecosystem but we remain focused and motivated to support Beach Village Committees to educate fisherman on sustainable fishing methods and in turn, restore fish stocks in Lake Malawi.
