Although English is the official language in Malawi, few people speak it in rural areas despite the children having to learn all of their lessons in English from Standard Five. Therefore, in a bid to help local children with their education, we have set up five Reading Clubs.
These Reading Clubs are run by Catherine, one of our new pre-school teachers. She welcomes children who are learning at primary school to come in the afternoon to learn and practise their English.
To begin with, storybooks are being used and resources have been made relating to the stories so that they can match up the pictures to the words in both ChiTonga and English.
These sessions have only been running a month but we hope that over time, the local children attending will have a better grasp of the English language.
