3. Ensure fishermen use larger meshed fishing nets to catch only the big fish, allowing baby fish to grow and breed
We have established 474 Beach Village Committees who are protecting 133 Chambo fish breeding grounds along 736 km of shoreline.
Local bylaws have been introduced and a fishing closed season adopted by fishermen. Beach Village Committees are now empowered to manage their local fish resource thus protecting biodiversity and improving fish catches.
There are still fishing Districts in Malawi which haven’t yet benefited from this community initiative.
