All four girls received a menstrual cup each and this is what they had to say:
Agness said, “My mother is very pleased. She struggled to find the money to buy me pads, but the menstrual cup can be reused again and again. It is helpful too, that if you don’t have undergarments, you can still use the (menstrual) cup.”
Echoing her friend’s comments, Alinafe said, “I agree that it is saving us money, but I love it because I can play netball during my period now. Before, I would sometimes not play as I was worried that my sanitary pad would move or fall out. Now I have freedom to do the things I want.”
The girls are aged 16 and 17 years old. They have been using pads for around two years, but before disposable pads became available, they were all using chitenge fabric. They each said they would miss school each month and this was reflected in their grades.
Monica said, “The pads helped us to not miss school but the menstrual cup is better. There is no leaking.”
Edrin continued, “And there is no odour either. We didn’t have enough pads to change them as frequently as we want to so there would be a smell. But not anymore.“
