Community Clubs are expanding their farms and have welcomed their first piglets in Malawi

Piglets expand farms

The majority of the new Community Fruit Tree Clubs have started sowing fruit seeds and are learning how to grow vegetables to harvest and sell at market to start their chicken businesses.

However, for some of the Clubs in year two of the project, they are starting to expand their smallholdings with the addition of pigs.

One club recently had four piglets. Project Manager Maston said, “The same Club has another pig which is expecting too. Although the first four piglets is below our expectations, it is a good start.”

The Club will decide whether to sell any of the piglets or raise them. At the moment, a three month old piglet sells at 35,000MWK (approx. £15/$20) and a two year old pig sells at 145,000MWK (approx. £65/$83).

Maston continued, “The Club will soon generate good income helping them provide for their families.”
