Anyone for pawpaw? These women have started their own fruit business, harvesting fruit from their own trees as well as buying more from others in their community. The two friends then travel south to the nearest large town where they can sell the fruit at a higher price at the weekly market.
Anita and Jane buy the papaya fruit from other people in their community for between 500MK and 700MK and by making the bus journey south, can sell a papaya for 1,000MK to 1,500MK. Not a bad mark up!
It is brilliant to see that women are becoming empowered to earn their own income – and all by supporting communities to plant fruit trees.
Why not plant a fruit tree with us today and help other Malawian women like Anita and Jane to create their own fruit business.
