Meet 24-year-old Steven who not only wanted to run a successful business but was conscious of the natural environment around him.
In order to protect the trees and make money, Steven set up a bee keeping business. He has bee hives situated amongst the trees which protects the forest as people won’t risk cutting down the trees as they are scared of getting stung. As a result he harvests enough honey to earn around 200,000MK (£180/$240) each month.
He said, “While making money, I protect the trees where my bee hives are situated. This allows me to collect deadwood or small branches to use on my fuel-efficient cookstove without chopping down the tree.”
Steven’s honey business is particularly successful as his stall is located on the main M5 road which runs from Salima along the lakeshore and to the city of Mzuzu.
