Health workers at Kachere clinic are glad the incinerator and disposal facility are finished and ready to use. Both facilities are secured behind a wall and locked gate so medical waste is not accessible and poses no risk to patients visiting the clinic.
However, the clinic is still in need of new toilets and washing facilities especially for the maternity department. Malawian women have to make the journey to their nearest health centre before they give birth. They are fined if they do not have their baby at a health facility, an initiative the government brought in to reduce the mortality rate.
