Last week we provided 23 new motorbikes, 16 for Fisheries Extension Staff and seven to our Fish Conservation team. We provide the motorbikes and the monthly running costs to enable all staff to carry out their duties.
The Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka, was present at the handover ceremony and thanked Ripple Africa for our work in Malawi.
Force Ngwira, our Country Director said, “We saw some gaps in the fisheries extension services created by the lack of mobility to reach Beach Village Committees (BVCs) hence the need to buy motorbikes.”
The fishing industry plays a vital role in food and nutrition security, sustainable livelihoods, provision of employment and poverty reduction in Malawi.
To date we are covering 450km of lakeshore, working with 333 BVCs and protecting 85 fish breeding areas.
