Nessie and her class would like to say hi. Nessie has been working with Ripple Africa for nine years as a trainee teacher, teaching Standard 3 at Mwaya Primary School. There are 147 students in her class, 62 boys and 82 girls.Â
As the students gather into the classroom block, they all take a seat on the ground. There are too many children to be able to fit desks in but one look at the pupils smiles and you can see why Nessie loves her job.
She said, “Growing up with many brothers and sisters in a loving environment, I knew I wanted to be a teacher from a young age.”
Her classroom resembles a home with lots of love and laughter, a space where children are confident and comfortable. Nessie’s favorite subject to teach is English and Reading because of how excited the students get. Knowing she can enjoy a story herself while reading to the students makes her smile too and she knows how important English is as a global language.
Nessie hopes to be a teacher for as long as she can. She said, “Knowing I am making a difference, no matter how big or small, keeps me enjoying my job.”
