Mike loves and is a huge Manchester United fan – the t-shirt is probably a give away! We first started working with Mike in 2012. Living with cerebral palsy, Mike relies on his wheelchair to be able to be part of village life. His family will push him down to the local shops or to watch football matches on one of few televisions in their rural village in Malawi. More importantly though, Mike is a key fixture at football practice, giving advice and coaching the players – he picks up a lot from watching those football matches on television. Despite the obvious physical challenges he faces, he doesn’t let it affect his life and inspires many in his community.
Our disabilities and rehabilitation project works with 120 children and young adults like Mike in rural Malawi. We carry out one-on-one therapy sessions and group sessions, refer children for life-changing operations and provide the necessary equipment needed to make their lives as fulfilling as possible. £7 a month provides all of this to Mike.
