The Kamudondo Forest Conservation Committee protects the hill just behind their village. As a group they patrol it every day and in the three years since the Committee was formed, deforestation has reduced.
They explained that people were chopping down the trees for burning bricks and producing charcoal but one way the Committee are preventing unwanted visitors is with the help of bees.
After investing in beehives, they are seeing the forest flourish with more flowers and plants too. However, some people still risk the bees to cut down trees.
Due to the regular patrolling, the Committee often catch those cutting down trees illegally and fine them. They saved the money from the fines and started a soap business and are now selling soap locally.
