Over the last decade, Msuli Beach Village Committee (BVC) have worked tirelessly to protect and improve their fish breeding area in Nkhata Bay District.
Empowered by our Fish for Tomorrow project, the volunteer committee started in 2014 and at that time, only three species of fish were found there. This was mainly due to people fishing with illegal fishing nets, including mosquito nets, which caught the baby fish and damaged the vegetation.
After receiving training, the BVC has watched their hard work turn into results. They educated the fishermen to use the recommended fishing nets and to fish in deeper waters.
Plant life in the breeding area has improved and the BVC report that there are now about 20 different species of fish. With an increase in fish species and the size of fish being caught, there has been a positive economic impact too in the area.
Well done to everyone involved. Change doesn’t happen overnight but dedication like this shows that a difference can be made and sustained.
