Today we celebrate International Literacy Day, which is an opportunity to highlight improvements in World literacy rates and reflect on the World’s remaining literacy challenges.
Illiteracy is a problem throughout Africa and Malawi is no exception, where a lack of access to quality education, high student to teacher ratios, high primary school drop-out rates and low secondary school enrolment, all contribute to generally low literacy rates. The result of this is that many people struggle with basic day to day tasks such as reading the newspaper, helping children with homework, understanding forms, writing letters and the ability to read a story to their children.
Ripple Africa supports literacy through the running of adult literacy classes in our community library. The library team also run Children’s corner on a Saturday to create the new generation of readers.
The ability to read and write makes a huge difference to the local people and we are always looking for support, so we can maintain this important resource for the local communities. The video is available in our bio under ‘Watch our Videos’.
