About Ripple Africa
The charity was founded in 2003 by Geoff and Liz Furber who both share a passion for Africa, especially northern Malawi. We started by running many projects in a small area learning from our experiences before expanding. We now run large scale conservation projects over many districts and support healthcare and education projects near to our base in Nkhata Bay District.
The charity’s overriding aim is to empower communities so they themselves can achieve a sustainable future – we strongly believe that it is the local people who are the solution to many of the challenges they face. We do many things, in response to the local communities’ needs, as many different issues are closely linked.
By enabling the local communities, great things can happen. Ripple Africa’s belief is “Providing a hand UP and not a hand out,” and that philosophy has been central to the charity’s ideology for nearly two decades.
From humble roots, employing just a handful of Malawian’s, today the charity covers six Districts. We now employ more than 170 Malawian team members and over 9,500 local people work with us on a voluntary or part time basis on our environmental projects.
Despite the charity’s significant achievements and ambitious scope, Ripple Africa is still small enough that the charity remains home-grown and grassroots based, and it is our intention to keep it that way.
Some of our achievements
- We help communities to conserve over 340 sq.km of forest.
- To date, we have helped communities to plant over 19 million trees. Each year approximately two million trees are planted.
- We are helping fishing communities to conserve the fish along 450 km of lakeshore.
- We are working with more than 47,000 households to provide each with a Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient cookstove, saving millions of bundles of wood per year.
- We provide 12,500 bundles of improved sweet potato vines to thousands of farmers each year.
- We educate and train fruit tree clubs and schools on how to successfully grow thousands of fruit trees each year.
