It is International Women’s Day and an opportunity to celebrate the women and girls in our lives. Today we introduce Mary and Maryam, two girls who are fortunate to have been part of, and benefitting from, our pilot menstrual cup project.
Mary is 17 and is in Standard 7 at Mwaya Primary School. One of the first girls to receive the menstrual cup, Mary was just as nervous as she was excited. Mary said, “I look forward to being able to save a bit of money. Being the oldest and only daughter in my family, due to our culture, I only go to my aunt when I have questions about my body.” Mary continued to say that since joining the girl’s group, run by Rebecca, she now has someone else she trusts and can talk to.
Maryam is in Standard 7 at Mazembe Primary School. She is 14 and ahead of the session with Rebecca, she said, “I am very nervous as I have never heard of such a thing before. I didn’t know it existed but I will give it a try.”
