To mark World Food Day, let us remind you about our Growing the Future projects. We are supporting families to grow improved orange-fleshed sweet potatoes and a variety of fruit trees as well as create sustainable farming businesses. We share simple techniques which get effective results and grow the futures of communities in Malawi.
Orange-fleshed Sweet Potatoes: During the rainy season we supply 1,250 farmers with 10 bundles of vines each. This is enough to grow sufficient sweet potatoes for family consumption and to sell any surplus at local markets. Our pre-school teachers grow these vines too for the children at pre-school!
Fruit Trees: We work with 100 community groups to grow thousands of fruit trees each year. This not only provides food but a source of income too allowing families to be able to afford other necessities and save money. They grow paw paw, guava, avocado, mango, tamarind and citrus fruit trees. Local schools and vulnerable people in the community benefit too.
Sustainable Farming: We teach the Community Clubs how to efficiently set up small-scale farming businesses by growing vegetables. They sell the vegetables at market and we teach the Club members basic finance and business skills to start a small chicken business.
