What do fishermen use to catch fish? Well, sometimes they use other fish!
Although the Usipa catches on this night weren’t good enough to attract many commercial buyers, other fishermen who catch chambo and catfish were keen to buy the usipa so that they could chop them up into small pieces and use them as bait to catch these larger fish.
They were painstakingly attaching bits of the fish onto hundreds of hooks ready to go out on their dug out canoes. These hooks are attached to nets which are dropped into the water and left for several hours before the fishermen pull the nets back into their canoes and come back to shore.
In Nkhata Bay District we are now consistently seeing larger sized chambo and catfish being caught which shows the positive impact of Ripple Africa’s Fish for Tomorrow project.
