Chilimba Beach Village Committee (BVC) have been generating an income from a variety of activities. The income is used by the Committee to fund patrols, support meetings, and help the members themselves.
Here are some of the ways that they have generated an income:
- The team charge fishermen and other beach users a fee to use their toilet block located at the beach landing site.
- They have a freezer where they store ice blocks which they sell to those transporting the fish to keep it fresh.
- They rent out fish drying racks
These are great ideas providing different avenues of income. When asked why they wanted to be BVC members they said, “Being a member allows us to contribute to our community. We are seeing a difference in the fish catches and seeing the effects of overfishing”.
