Maryam and Martha sell their sweet potato crops to earn an income in Malawi

Farming friends

Martha and Maryam are best friends. You will often find them in their sweet potato fields, working and helping each other so they can spend time together.

They both have large families and often struggle to make ends meet but growing sweet potatoes has made a big difference.

The two women sell some of their sweet potato crop to earn an income. Maryam said, “It gave me an escape from poverty.”

Maryam and her husband budget together which she says has helped their relationship as they know what the money is being spent on. This includes paying schools fee for two of their four children. Martha has been able to send all four of her eldest children to secondary school.

Martha said, “It is hard work (farming) but I am happy.”

Both ladies share the benefits of growing and eating sweet potatoes in their villages.
