Involving the whole community in fish conservation in Malawi

Everyone involved

Mkumbira Sub-Fisheries Association Chair, Andrew Kamanga is not a fisherman nor does he own any fishing gear. However, he is passionate about protecting fish for future generations.

Before our Fish for Tomorrow project, he said, “Non fishermen were not allowed to participate in fish conservation activities but with this project we are now given the chance to be involved in Beach Village Committees (BVCs).”

He explained how, by having the right mix of people in BVCs, success can happen. He said, “Lichizi fish breeding area in Zamandele is well protected by the BVC as they have the right people. If this project can run for years to come, we will have more and bigger fish in our lake.”
