Recent patrols by the Sub Fisheries Association in Mangochi District has resulted in illegal fishing gears being confiscated.
Beach Village Committee Chairmen are members of the Sub Fisheries Association and worked together in two Traditional Authority areas, Chowe and Malindi, to carry out the patrols.
In total, four fishing gears, each made up of hundreds of mosquito nets, were confiscated. Mosquito nets, when used in fishing, catch baby fish. This depletes stocks as the baby fish are not being left to grow and breed.
Our Fish Conservation project, which started in Nkhata Bay District over 10 years ago, has seen a positive impact in fish catches where mosquito nets are no longer used and fish breeding areas are protected. Click here for more information.
