Umali is 78 and has 24 grandchildren although he was quick to tell us that they don’t all live with him!
He has been farming since he was young and this year we approached him to become one of the commercial farmers to create more improved sweet potato vines. This will enable the project to expand and benefit more families. 80% of Malawians are subsistence farmers and giving them access to this improved variety which is higher in vitamin A and other nutrients is really important especially for children and pregnant women.
Here is Umali in one of his fields harvesting some sweet potatoes from vines planted in January.
