Many of the Forest Conservation Committees we work with are keen to have beehives within the areas they protect.
On the one hand the Committee can benefit from the honey produced either as a potential income or just some yummy honey to eat. On the other hand, African bees provide security.
Typically, African honey bees are more defensive and react faster to disturbances. They’re even known to have chased people for up to 400 metres away from the hive – further than other varieties of honey bees.
All of these traits make them a great natural bodyguard for the trees as people don’t want to risk upsetting them and being at the end of a nasty sting.
