Our team in Mangochi District, along with Beach Village Committees, have been educating fishermen on the need to use multifilament fishing gears – and they are starting to see a change.
Our District Manager, Robert Manthonera, said, “Fishermen in the area of Senior Chief Nankumba have begun to stop using illegal monofilament gears following a massive campaign that explains why the use of this net is banned as it is destructive to fish in the lake.”
Anold is one of those fishermen who has stopped using ilegal monofilament nets and has bought the correct fishing nets. He said, “I now understand how the net can still catch and kill fish when it is left behind in the water as it does not decompose. I have bought the right fishing nets, a multifilament net, and it is better because this net lasts longer so I won’t have to keep buying new ones. In the past, I would have to buy new monofilament net every three months.”
Anold continued to say that he used to have poor catches with lots of little fish but that with the new net, he is now catching bigger fish and able to earn more money.
Recently Anold has supported local Beach Village Committees during awareness meetings with other fishermen so he can share his positive experiences.
